Objectives

This program is designed for physicians new to Canada who are preparing to take Part II of the MCC licensing exam.  The course will provide:

  • An overview of the "Canadian approach" to the physician/patient visit.  This will help foreign-trained physicians integrate effectively into the Canadian health care system and understand the expectations of Canadian patients.
  • An introduction to the Objective Structured Clinical Examination format.  The OSCE is used by Canadian Medical Schools, the Medical Council of Canada (Part II), the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • An opportunity to practice the clinical examination format.  Physicians will participate in standardized patient assessment stations and will receive personalized feedback.

Program - Saturday

1. Canadian Approach to the Physician/Patient Visit

  • The essentials of the patient visit
  • Expectations from a graduate of a Canadian medical school
  • Demonstration of the Canadian approach, using a standardized patient and  'check-list'.

2. Communication Skills

  • How candidates are expected to approach a ten-minute visit
  • Demonstration of the Canadian approach, using a standardized patient and  'check-list'.
  • Important aspects of physician/patient communication.

3. Data Gathering

  • What data needs to be collected
  • Asking the right questions - to obtain the information you need from the patient
  • Communicating a plan of action, including planned investigations

4. Standardized Patient Practice

  • Working in pairs, each physician will have an opportunity to work  through two cases on standardized patients.

5. Physical Examinations

  • Demonstration of the physician exam with standardized patients
  • Video clips showing optimal examination techniques

6. Data Interpretation

  • Interpretation of data provided by the patient
  • Handling data during the examination

7.  Integrating the Data

  • Doing the complete case
  • Discuss issues and concerns from the day's program

Program - Sunday

Standardized Patient Assessments

  • Each physician will have an opportunity to participate in three different stations
  • Individualized feedback will be provided
  • Each station will be 10 minutes, plus 5 minutes for feedback.
