Keyboard

Cursor

  • An "I-beam" that indicates the current position of the mouse pointer
  • Changes to an "arrow" when outside the text display area

Insertion Point

  • A flashing solid bar
  • Indicates where keyboard entries will be placed in a document
  • Can be moved to a new location by left-clicking the mouse

Signature File Exercise

  • Open a word-processing program
  • Create a document containing your name, address and phone number
  • Save the document to the diskette or hard drive

Highlighting (also known as "Selecting")

  • A technique to work with a block of text
  • Selected text
    1. Double-click on a word
    2. Left-click and drag across a block of text
    3. Left click at the start of the text, then Shift-click at the end of the text

Copy, Cut & Paste

  • Copy selected information within a document
  • Available from the "Edit" menu of most Window programs
  • Uses the Windows "Clipboard" function

Text Boxes

  • Sometimes the Insertion is already flashing inside the box
  • If not, click inside the box before entering text
  • Demonstrate during the later Internet section
