Message Components

This page describes the basic components of an e-mail message. Writing an e-mail message is like writing on a preprinted memo pad. The computer displays a form in which you enter the following information:

Date
This is added automatically when the message is sent. The time is usually the local time, but some e-mail systems use Greenwich Mean Time.

Sender (From)
The e-mail address of the sender – sometimes their full name is also displayed.

Recipient (To)
The e-mail address of the recipient – sometimes their full name is also displayed.

Attachments
Files attached to the message. These may be text files, graphic files, or files produced by a computer application such as a word-processor.

Subject
The topic of the message – make it specific and brief. Try to limit messages to one topic.  This makes it easier for the recipient to reply in context.

Message
The main body of the message – keep it brief.

Signature
A text file that is automatically attached to the bottom of the message. It usually gives the sender's name and address. Keep them short and simple.
