Operating System
Recommendation: Windows Vista

  • Should provide an installation CD-ROM and documentations

Office Suite
Usually combines a word processor, database, and spreadsheet

  • May be pre-installed by a computer manufacturer (may be an older version)
  • Should provide an installation CD-ROM and complete manuals
  • Example: Microsoft Office

Word Processor
Enters, edits, and prints text documents

  • Example: Microsoft Word

Database
Maintains lists of information

  • Example: Microsoft Access

Spreadsheet
Maintains information tables that require calculations

  • Example: Microsoft Excel

Accounting
Tracks bank account and other financial information

  • Example: Quicken, Quickbooks, Simply Accounting

Voice Recognition Software
Allows the computer to understand voice input or voice commands

  • Practical for some uses, but errors are still frequent
  • Example: Naturally Speaking

Other Software
Extra software is often packaged with  "home" computer systems

  • Often an older version of the programs
