Devices that provide the video display

Video Card

  • Controls the video display
  • "Integrated" video uses the main system RAM rather than having it's own
  • Advanced users or game players may wish to have a dedicated video card with increased memory

Video – CRT Monitors

Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT)

  • Television-like display screens
  • Flickering can bother some users
  • The most common size is a 17 inch screen (measured diagonally)
  • On a 17-inch CRT, only about 16 inches of the screen is visible

Dell

  • A 17 inch M782 is part of the Optiplex package

Video – LCD Flat Panel

Flat Panel Displays (Liquid Crystal Displays, LCD)

  • Flat panel displays are used on laptops, and as desktop units
  • The desktop units take up much less desk space than a CRT
  • The entire screen is visible
  • Does not flicker
  • Some find them hard to look at for prolonged period, others love them
  • The most common size is a 15-inch screen (similar viewing area to a 17 inch CRT)

  • Option: E1503FP 15-inch (being replaced by the 1504FP)
  • Option: E1703FP 17-inch
